The wooden church in the centre of Savonlinna (Nyslott) was built by the town's Orthodox parish and consecrated in 1846; the design is attributed to an architect of the Visconti family working in St Petersburg. Savonlinna was then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire. In 1938 the building was sold to the Lutheran parish and became known as the Little Church (Pikkukirkko). In February 2017 the Lutheran parish handed it over to the Pikkukirkko association, and in 2021 the church was bought by the Saimaa Orthodox parish.
According to the Diocese of Kuopio and Karelia on 1 February 2025, the church returned to Orthodox ownership in February 2017 and was bought by the Saimaa parish in 2021; it is the oldest sanctuary of the parish.
