The wooden five-domed church was built to drawings made in 1880 by the St Petersburg Synod architect Sadovnikov and consecrated in 1892; it is the sixth Orthodox church in Ilomantsi and the largest wooden Orthodox church in Finland. For the construction the parish took a loan of 40,000 marks from the Imperial Finnish Senate, which the parishioners repaid over many years. Ilomantsi was then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire. The church is entered in the built heritage register of the Finnish Heritage Agency.
