The wooden church was built in 1884 as the church of the Russian garrison of Tornio, a border town of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire; an Orthodox field church had been founded here under Alexander I and consecrated in 1829. After the garrison left, the church stood empty from 1912, passed to the Finnish state in 1918 and later housed a regional museum. In 1956 the building was moved to its present site on Lukiokatu, and in the 1970s it was used by a Pentecostal congregation. In 1985–1987 it was restored and reconsecrated as an Orthodox church.
