Four open canals — Kutvele, Käyhkää, Kukonharju and Telataipale — built in 1792–1798 under Alexander Suvorov to let vessels of the Russian Saimaa flotilla pass between Savonlinna and Lappeenranta; this part of Finland had belonged to the Russian Empire since 1743. The canals formed part of the fortification system ordered by Catherine II after the war of 1788–1790 and are regarded as the first completed canals in what is now Finland. The best preserved is the Kukonharju canal, about 800 metres long, with timber breakwaters; the coordinates given are for it.
