A complex at Unioninkatu 38, built in the 1820s to drawings by Carl Ludvig Engel for a cantonist school, a military educational establishment of the Russian army; the oldest block was completed in 1823. The Grand Duchy of Finland was then part of the Russian Empire. In 1832 the school was converted into a Russian military hospital, which operated until 1917. In 1918 the buildings passed to the university clinics and in the mid-1990s to the University of Helsinki; after renovation the block was named after Zacharias Topelius.
