A system of forts, redoubts and batteries on Kotkansaari and neighbouring islands, built in 1790–1809 by order of Catherine II together with the land fortress of Kyminlinna as an outwork of Kronstadt and a naval base. The round stone-and-brick Fort Slava on Kukouri island was built in 1791–1794, at the same time as Fort Elisabeth on Varissaari. In 1855, during the Crimean War, the fortifications were destroyed by an Anglo-French fleet. The area was part of the Russian Empire when built; the ruins are included in Finland's inventory of nationally significant built cultural environments.
