A fortress in the north of Hovinsaari island in Kotka, part of the South-Eastern Finland fortification system built by Russia after the war of 1788–1790. The first bastion fort of 1791–1795 was built under the supervision of Alexander Suvorov; in 1803–1808 it was replaced by a caponier fortress six times larger, designed by General Jan Pieter van Suchtelen. The area was part of the Russian Empire when built and passed to Finland after 1917; the Finnish Defence Forces used the fortress from 1939 to 2005.
