FinlandСунд1832–1854Military sites
A fortress in the Åland Islands that the Russian Empire began building in 1832 as its western outpost; the settlement of Skarpans grew beside it. In August 1854, during the Crimean War, the unfinished fortress was taken by an Anglo-French force and soon blown up. Åland was part of the Russian Empire until 1917; today the ruins are a historic monument with a visitor centre opened in 2022.
