A wooden barracks complex on land donated by the town in 1879; it was built by the authorities of the Grand Duchy of Finland, then part of the Russian Empire, to designs by the architect August Boman and received its first recruits in 1881. In 1902 the 5th Finland Rifle Regiment arrived; under it new wooden and brick blocks were erected west of the old barracks, and in 1907 an Orthodox church was built for the garrison. After 1917 the site passed to the Finnish army; since 1967 the buildings have been used for housing, offices and schools.
