FinlandТурку1915–1917Military sites
A barracks area on the seashore south-west of the centre of Turku, built from 1915 for the Russian Baltic Fleet; a naval air station also operated here. Finland was then part of the Russian Empire. The main building, completed in 1917, was designed as a naval hospital but became a barracks because of the war; it is a large brick building with baroque-style projections. In 1918 the area passed to Finland and training of Finnish Air Force pilots began here; from 1967 it housed an anti-aircraft regiment.
