A barracks block on Kasarmitori square, built to designs by C. L. Engel for the training battalion of the Finnish military formed in 1818; the battalion moved in at the turn of 1824–1825 and was raised to Life Guard status in 1829. Finland was then part of the Russian Empire as a Grand Duchy. A second soldiers' wing was built in the 1840s under E. B. Lohrmann, and a service building and an NCOs' house were added in 1889–1891. The buildings were badly damaged in the bombing of February 1944; Engel's officers' wing was rebuilt as part of the Ministry of Defence building.
