The northernmost link of Peter the Great's Naval Fortress chain, built by Russia on the Katanpää headland of Lypyrtti island during the First World War; Finland was then part of the Russian Empire. Work began in 1914; two concrete artillery batteries were built and, by 1916, a small garrison of about twenty timber buildings with a water tower. Most of the buildings retain their original appearance; the batteries and cobbled gun roads are protected as ancient monuments.
