The Orthodox church of the Russian garrison on Pikkutori square was built in the late 1890s with money from the Russian military construction fund and completed in autumn 1900; Hämeenlinna (Tavastehus) was then part of the Grand Duchy of Finland within the Russian Empire. After the Russian troops left in early 1918 the building became the property of the Finnish state, the domes were removed, and in 1924 the church was converted into a library to plans by Bertel Strömmer. It later housed the provincial archive and educational institutions and is now the Kumppanuustalo community centre; the iconostasis is kept in the town's present Orthodox church.
