FinlandХельсинки1850–1917Military sites
A military island off Helsinki, incorporated into the Sveaborg fortress in the 1810s; Finland was then part of the Russian Empire. From the 1850s, during the Crimean War, artillery batteries were built here and added to until 1917, and in the 1910s a large red-brick garrison with barracks, stables, stores, a power station and a radio station was erected to standard designs in the western part of the island. After 1917 a Finnish garrison was stationed on the island; the Cadet School building was completed here in 1940.
