The cemetery church was founded on 8 September 1893 on the section of the Central Cemetery allotted for Russian burials and consecrated on 27 April (9 May) 1895; it predates St Nicholas Cathedral, as the community's funds were then insufficient for a larger church. The church is attached to St Nicholas Cathedral in Vienna. By the late 1990s the building had fallen into disrepair and was closed; in 2004–2006 it was restored with private donations from Russia under Wolfgang Zehetner and reconsecrated on 12 October 2006.
